Sony Ericsson Xperia ray

No matter how you slice it, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray  is the embodiment of cuteness. It’s stylish, with bikini waistline and shiny black mirrored face, available in various colors, sports the newest version of Android beautified by the Timescape overlay, and has the acclaimed 8MP Exmor R camera sensor.

From the looks of it, only a very few things can ruin this munchkin, chief among which would be an eventual high price tag. Is that the case? Read on our review of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray where we try to solve this puzzle for you...

Design:

As small touchscreen smartphones go, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is almost the perfect size, not getting lost in your palm if you have big hands, and fitting admirably if you are regular. The handset is one of the thinnest smartphones out there, at 0.37” (9.4 mm), and feathery at just 3.53oz (100 g). We also noticed that the Xperia ray is extremely comfortable for one handed operation due to its dimensions - your thumb just reaches everywhere like an anteater's tongue.

A big part amidst the phone's positives plays the screen, which is 3.3” LCD,  and Sony Ericsson didn't skimp on the level of image detail, gracing the Xperia ray with 480x854 pixels – a pretty high resolution for a screen of this size. Plugging the numbers in a pixel density calculator returned 297ppi, which is just shy of the 300ppi threshold. This threshold became mainstream knowledge when Steve Jobs introduced the 326 ppi Retina Display iPhone 4, and said that above around 300ppi a normal human eye can't detect the individual pixels from 10-12 inches of distance.

Unlike the Xperia arc, the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray’s screen sports rather wide viewing angles, with nary a change in contrast or brightness when looked from extremes. Couple that with above average brightness and visibility outside, plus very good sensitivity, and we can say that the Xperia ray flaunts one of the best little LCD screens we’ve encountered so far.

The 3.3 inches LCD display - Sony Ericsson Xperia ray Review
The 3.3 inches LCD display
This alone makes it a pretty enticing handset, running the latest version of Android - 2.3 Gingerbread, but when you add the 8MP Exmor R camera sensor on the back with LED video light (yep, you can't use it as a flash, it has to be turned on manually), which proved its virtues in the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, we might have a formidable category contender.

Unlike the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc, the Xperia ray sports a front-facing VGA camera for video chat, but it skips the HDMI port – something had to give. There are also only 300MB of user-available ROM for apps, and a 4GB microSD card is included in the package.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia ray is the first to hit retail with the new Xperia line design, which boasts a huge semi-circle in the middle for a physical home button, and two capacitive keys on its flanks. We dare to say it's better than the previous design, which had overly thin buttons arranged in an arc under the display, which took getting used to.

The resulting design looks very stylish – a thin handset with shiny black front, but lighthearted at the same time, with the choice of pink, black, white and gold colors. It is actually one of the few handsets that look even better in person to us than the press shots, which don't do the glossy front justice. It has every chance to grab the hearts of the design-conscious and/or female smartphone lovers, plus it delivers on the functionality front as well. The only thing we disliked is the placement of the microUSB port on the upper left side, which makes using the phone with the cable plugged in a bit uncomfortable.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

Introduction

Not the first time Sony Ericsson are trying to mix man and robot. But this time they're not simply putting the W in Android. The Live with Walkman is part of the company's ongoing effort to bring their smartphone lineup up to date. The next one due for upgrade is the Sony Ericsson W8.
Just like its predecessor, the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman puts the music in your pocket without scraping the cash out of it. It's more than a music player though - a 5 MP camera phone and a Gingerbread-powered smartphone with all the right features for the money-conscious buyer.

The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman is designed for music lovers and tries to stay focused on things that matter to a presumably younger audience. To be honest, both the xLOUD audio enhancement and TrackID are available across the entire Xperia lineup, so no bonus points for the Live with Walkman.

There's an obvious effort though to make a familiar design more upbeat and attractive - bright color branding and flashing lights. The traditionally good social package in Sony Ericsson droids will be another plus for the younger users.

The Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will have the following mediocre specifications:
  • 3.2-inch capacitive touch-screen display (480 x 320 pixels)
  • 1Ghz processor
  • 5MP rear camera with 8x digital zoom, auto focus, and LED flash
  • Front facing VGA camera
  • 720p video recording
  • 320MB internal storage (Editor's Note: Yes, we think this is as absurd as you do. 320MB of storage on a device designed for music? Way to go, Sony.)
  • Up to 32GB microSD support
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • USB support
  • Wi-Fi and Hotspot functionality
  • Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)
  • FM radio with RDS
Additionally, since the primary purpose of this device is to play music there are a number of unique software and hardware features, including:
  • Stereo speakers (which I assume will be quite good since this device is primarily for audio playback)
  • xLOUD audio technology which enhances the audio output of the inbuilt speakers at higher levels.
  • TrackID music recognition service (similar to Shazam)
  • An Infinite button which enables users to have instant access to new content about their favourite artist
  • Qriocity music and video content services giving users access to millions of songs and thousands of movies

Sony Xperia S

Introduction

In staging their grand return, Sony Mobile could've done a lot worse than the Xperia S. The fresh divorcees are back on the market, their new Xperia flagship kindly supplying the bang. And while the HD screen and dual-core processor are not exactly breaking news, there's an extensive set of features to make a geek's heart flutter.

he Sony Xperia S aims for camera excellence with 12MP still photography and 1080p video recording. It has an HD screen and a microHDMI port, not to mention a dedicated TV Launcher that lets you control the phone with your TV remote.
The Xperia S is a high-performance phone too - while quad-core phones will soon hit the shelves, the dual-core 1.5GHz processor and Adreno 220 GPU show good results in early benchmarks.
We'll do a first round of benchmarks later, but let's have a closer look at the specs of the Sony Xperia S first.

Sony Xperia S at a glance:

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, 14.4 Mbps HSDPA, 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
  • Dimensions: 128 x 64 x 10.6 mm, 144 g
  • Display: 4.3" 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen, 720 x 1280 pixels
  • CPU: Qualcomm MSM8260 chipset, dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 220 GPU
  • OS: Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), planned 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update
  • Memory: 32GB of storage, 1GB of RAM
  • Camera: 12 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, face detection and touch focus; 1080p video recording at 30fps; 1.3MP front-facing camera with 720p video recording, sweep multi-angle shots for lenticular print effect
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA; Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, microHDMI port
  • Misc: Sony Timescape UI, TV launcher, built-in accelerometer, proximity sensor, Sony Mobile Bravia engine, multi-touch input, scratch-resistant surface, microSIM only
Not quite like the Sony Ericsson Xperia arcs, is it? The Xperia S is better in almost every respect, save for thickness. Still, considering how thick those old 12MP shooters were (especially around the camera), 10.6mm sounds great.
The screen on the Xperia S deserves praise too. The 4.3" BRAVIA LCD of 720p resolution is up there with the best screens on the market. At 342ppi, it's definitely one of the sharpest.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support
  • 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 3.7" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels) on Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine
  • Android OS v2.3.4 Gingerbread
  • 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 5 MP autofocus camera, LED flash, geo-tagging, 3D Sweep Panorama
  • 720p video @ 30fps, continuous autofocus with continuous autofocus and stereo sound
  • Front facing VGA camera, video chat (Google, Skype)
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • microSD slot (32GB supported, 2GB card included)
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Voice dialing
  • Adobe Flash 11 support
  • microHDMI port
  • Deep Xperia Facebook integration

Main disadvantages

  • Forced camera downgrade to 5MP
  • Display has poor viewing angles
  • The competition has dual-core CPUs, 1080p video
  • No smart dialing
  • Loudspeaker has below average performance
  • Very limited video codec support
  • Memory card slot under the battery cover
The back of the Sony Ericsson neo V is rather interesting - just like on the Vivaz and the neo, the 5MP lens is unusually placed almost in the middle. It makes sense though – the lens is nearly impossible to accidentally cover with a finger. The lens is recessed to ensure protection against scratches and smudges. Next to it, there is a LED flash, which is mostly useful as a video light.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V is quite reasonably sized and no hassle to carry around or put into pockets. The 3.7” reality display is on the better part of LCDs. The Neo V is well-built and there is nothing to complain about other than the fingerprint issues. The handset feels solid and is quite comfortable to hold and operate. A few months late to the show and a forced substitution at that, the neo V falls in a lower price bracket. It doesn't look or feel cheap though. The only compromise for users to consider is the lower-spec'd still camera.

Android 2.3.4 lands on the Neo

The Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V runs the latest Gingerbread version 2.3.4 of Android. It is already available for the entire Xperia 2011 lineup, including the first Neo - or what's left of it in stores. Let's once again go over the new stuff in the latest Gingerbread release:
  • Sony 3D sweep panos: panorama shots that can be rendered on compatible 3D TVs
  • Screen capture - grab a screenshot anywhere on your Xperia
  • Enhanced Facebook integration
  • Swipe text input - works just like the popular Swype, but it's T9 Trace
  • USB on-the-go functionality (requires Sony Ericsson LiveDock)
When viewing 3D images shot with this phone on a 3D-compatible monitor, you may experience discomfort in the form of eye strain, fatigue, or nausea. To prevent these symptoms, we recommend that you take regular breaks. However, you need to determine for yourself the length and frequency of breaks you require, as they vary according to the individual.
